The Pedagogical Solution: Freire’s Critical Pedagogy and Social Democracy

2016

‘A critical [educational] process is driven and justified by mutuality. This ethic of mutual development’, argued Ira Shor (2009) in the context of his analysis of Freire’s dialogic pedagogy, ‘can be thought as of a Freirean addition to the Vygotskyan one’ (p. 291). As this quote suggests, the aim of this chapter is to describe the essential feature of Paulo Freire’s solution to the conundrum that Lev Vygotsky’s framework stumbled upon. While Shor’s sentence hits the target, it relies on a widespread opinion among education scholars, who tend to emphasize the ethical component of critical pedagogy in general and Freire’s project in particular (Darder, 2009; Flores-Kastaris et al., 2009).

Key challenges for Latvian teachers in mainstream schools: a basis for preparing teachers for inclusion

2010

This paper analyses current research in Latvia to identify key issues related to inclusive education, special education and social pedagogy. A review of Latvian literature since 2004 was undertaken to determine what is known about special and inclusive education, how it is reflected in various research papers and how it related to the current situation in schools. Key findings suggest that teachers need to be better informed about the potential of inclusion. They need to be prepared to teach children with diverse educational needs in a changing educational landscape. Teacher education for inclusion is identified as a 21st-century priority in Latvia.

Fostering transformational teacher agency in Finnish teacher education

2018

In this article, we studied how well teacher education in Finland is able to answer the changing needs of the contemporary world. More precisely, we focussed on the question of how well an alternative teacher education model guides teacher students’ agency towards a transformational view of the teaching profession, making it possible for schools to enable social change. This question was studied in the framework of critical social pedagogy. The data for this article was collected ethnographically by observing meetings in the Critical Integrative Teacher Education (CITE) programme at the University of Jyväskylä in 2015–2017. The analysis is based on a theoretical background in which we outli…

Education and Social Structure

2015

In this chapter Education and Social Structure, Jon P. Knudsen argues that the role and effect of education is strongly integrated with social and cultural structures. In order to understand how education works, one has to understand how it interrelates with the norms and structure of the cultural environment it plays into. The chapter calls for a balanced development strategy, where new initiatives are discussed in relation to the social and historical environment it is part of. The focus moves from the university to the region. Of course we cannot assume that all universities are seen as part of regions. Some draw on students and subject matter from a wider world. However, even the region…

2013

Anotācija Promocijas darba pētījuma aktualitāti nosaka pārmaiņas, kuras saistītas ar sociālekonomisko problemātiku Latvijā 90-os gados un tās izpratnes nepieciešamību, risinot vecāka gadagājuma cilvēku integrācijas iespējas jaunā sociālā vidē. Vecāka gadagājuma cilvēku integrēšanās sociālajā vidē ir apgrūtināta līdzdalības sabiedriskajā dzīvē iespēju nepietiekamības dēļ. Teorētiskās analīzes rezultātā izveidots novecošanas procesa izpētes teorētiskais ietvars, noteikti labizjūtas un līdzdalības rādītāji. Pētījums veikts, lai papl…
